Even with regular visits to our Mazda service center, you can still run into car trouble. It’s a good idea to know how to deal with common automotive problems when the experts from Champion Mazda aren’t there to help you. One thing drivers definitely need to know is how to jump their car when it won’t start.

Why You Need a Jump

Simply put, when you start up your vehicle the battery provides the spark needed to get your car moving. If your battery is drained or not working properly, you’re not going anywhere.

The problem could be that your battery is old and won’t hold a charge. Sometimes the battery gets drained when a driver accidentally leaves the headlights or interior lights on for an extended period. Whatever the case may be, now you need to jump it.

What to Do

First, you need jumper cables. These heavily insulated cables have clamps on both ends and two sides, negative and positive. Usually, they are color-coded, red for positive and black for negative. You also need another working car with a good battery.

You connect one of the jumper cable’s positive clip to the dead battery’s positive terminal, then the other positive clip to the working battery’s positive terminal. Do the same for the negative clips and terminals, in that same order.

Start the working vehicle and let it idle, giving the dead battery time to charge up. Then test out the interior lights in your car to see if they work. After that, wait a few more minutes and start to drive.

Most of the time, when you experience a dead battery, there’s something amiss with your vehicle. So, once you’ve jumped your car, stop by our Mazda dealership serving Henderson, KY. We’ll make sure your battery is in good working order.
